Happy 2016!
As I type that, I can hardly believe the date, especially as I look back on the year that just flew past. I’m reminded of the old slogan: Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
It’s trite, and simplistic, but true. But I can’t help but ask myself–what am I going to do with today, and with “the rest of my life”?
I’m not going to make resolutions since I generally break them. I’m not a list maker, much to my husband’s dismay (who is the master list maker of all list makers. He even makes lists for lists.) And I’m not goal oriented either.
So what am I?
A daydreamer. A die-hard romantic. An ever-hopeful optimist. That still doesn’t answer my question: What am I going to do with this day, this “rest of my life”?
Several months ago I started reading “Simple Abundance” a daily devotional by Sarah Ban Breathnach. It’s more than a devotional; it’s a guide to recognizing the joy in each moment. I haven’t quite reached that state, but I’m hopeful.
I start each day (or try to) with a prayer of gratitude for all I have, and a prayer that I’ll treat those I meet, whether on the phone, via email or in person, with respect. That I’ll try to see each person, even those who are nasty or just plain crazy, as children of God, needing love and compassion. I’m rarely successful, but I figure I can only keep trying.
So as you go out into your “rest of your life” today, I wish that for you–that others will treat you with compassion and kindness, and see you as children of God.
Happy 2016.
